Marketing and Social Media: How Many Technology Industries Use Social Media Successfully

By Christi Rocco

Anyone business owner with a computer and the Internet understands how essential it is to get their name out there in the online world. With technology companies it is even more crucial, because they are expected to have an online presence and be on the cutting edge of the Internet because of their industry. Many employ a marketing firm for their marketing and social media goals, but others have people in-house who manage this feature of marketing for them. At any rate, most technology industries are the perfect example of what other companies and industries should strive for when executing their own marketing and social media objectives.

When I studied some technology firms' Twitter accounts, I saw a common theme: an eagerness to help the individual with a question or concern. For example, Dell's Twitter page not only tweets pertinent information about technology, but they also take the time to answer any problems a follower may have with their computer or even their software. Companies that take their time in attempting to help people not only is helpful and positive for the individual with the question, but it looks good for other followers who can now rest easy knowing if they ever have a problem, they can turn to the Twitter account for support. It puts a human spin on technology, and marketing and social media.

With another marketing and social media instrument-Facebook-there were many technology companies that used the site to their advantage. CNET, a company that "provides the latest tech news, unbiased reviews, videos, podcasts, software downloads, and Hot-Tos, making tech products easy to find, understand, and use" had many outlets available on their page for the technology junkie. As stated, they had an incredible amount of links to reviews and information that customers would be interested in, and so many helpful downloads and a ton of information about everything pertinent to the technology industry. Their page is definitely one that illustrates a Facebook page and a marketing and social media strategy that works amazingly well for its followers.

When in-house employees aren't sufficient (this could be especially true for a small technology-based firm) then a marketing firm may be the best way to handle a company's marketing and social media. There are firms out there that specialize in working with the technology industry that know what needs to be focused on in regards to marketing and social media, and they'll study your company and what would be an ideal outlet for a marketing aim. They may initially cost more than an in-house employee, but many companies grasp the value in using a marketing firm for their company's advertising needs.

Using marketing and social media successfully is even more crucial for a technology-based industry, and in today's world, there needs to be a presence on the Internet for technology-based companies to prosper. Whether a marketing firm or an in-house employee is utilized, simply looking at other technology firms and how they utilize marketing and social media to their advantage is a great way to base how your own business should be approaching marketing and social media.
