A BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF ISLAM AN AMERICAN MUSLIM PATRIOT’S FIGHT TO SAVE HIS FAITH featuring author Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser Among the unsettling shifts in the wake of 9/11 was the global attention paid to Islam. Here in the United States, we became divided between those who believed every Muslim was a potential threat and those who believed no Muslim could do wrong. For conservative Wisconsin native and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, these radical times mean facing a new reality as a devout Muslim and a patriot – possibly even betraying his faith, by asking: “Can a good Muslim be a good American as well?” Dr. Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to instill in young American Muslims an appreciation for the positive impact that this nation’s ideals have had upon the world. He offers non-Muslims an understanding of the difference between Islam and Islamism, or political Islam, and how violence and extremism run counter to Islam’s true teachings. As he argues, until we acknowledge the threat of Islamism in all its forms, the majority of Americans recognize only the most obvious: terrorism. In A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Dr. Jasser posits that virulent political Islamist movements betray both religious values and principles of modernity and universal equality and asserts that this is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution. ___________________________________________________ Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. Hosted by Walter Lohman Director, Asian Studies Center, The Heritage Foundation RSVP online | or call (202) 675-1752 Terms and conditions of attendance are posted at heritage.org/Events/terms.cfm All events may be viewed live at heritage.org News media inquiries, call (202) 675-1761 The Heritage Foundation’s Allison Auditorium Books will be available for purchase and to be signed by the Author. 214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE | Washington, DC 20002 | (202) 546-4400 |
