When my wife and I bought each house we carefully compared all the houses in our price range and chose the one that appealed to us the most. Even though they varied in price as our income grew they all had a special appeal to us at the time. We not only invested our money in these houses but also our "Sweat Equity" which was our own labor to improve the landscape around them.
