To a Louse - Standard English And would some power the Giver give us To see ourselves as others see us! The above is a famous poem by Robert Burns, the old Scottish Poet Laureate of Scotland. He was writing about a louse he saw in a rich woman's wig while sitting behind her in church one Sunday. The main point of the poem was that we see ourselves as "ithers" or others see us. However, what we really need in this life is to see ourselves as God sees us. God sees us like precious diamonds placed against a background of black velvet with a very bright light shining upon them in order to reflect the brilliance of the diamonds.
