Here are the first few lines: The U.S. has been fighting wars for most -- if not all -- of my children's lives, yet it doesn't affect us much at all, so explaining the significance of  Veterans Day to my boys (ages 8, 10, and 13) is a challenge. It's easy to forget there are soldiers still dying in Afghanistan, and military serving in perilous places all over the world, while my boys worry whether their fantasy draft picks will do well on Monday Night Football. I watch the news with my kids and try to talk about the sacrifices soldiers make for our freedom, but I'm not sure what sinks in.
I too am a veteran; volunteered for the draft in September of 1953. I did not see combat but I was sent to Berlin, GR where I served as a "desk jockey" doing, among other things, the work of a Public Information Officer. My wife's deceased husband who did two tours in Viet Nam was in both the Marines and Air Force and her son, Paul, was also in the Marines. We now have four grandchildren in the armed forces plus one grandson, David, who did two tours in Iraq while in the Marines but now is a civilian. We currently have three active duty Marines, Alex, who is in Afghanistan.
