Toiling VS THE BLESSING - Luke 5:5
When I was a kid about 8 or 9 years old there was a comic strip in what we then called the "Funny Papers" which was called "Tillie, the Toiler". It was about a girl named Tillie who was a secretary so the
cartoonist used the word "toiler" in the title because her adventures were work related. Toil has long been used to describe work. The online free dictionary defines "toil" as: 1.To labor continuously or work strenuously, and 2.To proceed with difficulty. However, there is a difference between God ordained labor and toiling, as you will see.
In the world system which is also known as the Babylonian system toil is good and it can make you rich but there is sorrow (trouble) with it. However, in God's Kingdom THE BLESSING of the Lord makes rich and he adds no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10:22.
Following is a Biblical example from Luke 5:5 of toiling vs THE BLESSING: Jesus came to lake Gennesaret or the Sea of Galilee and needed a platform from which to preach so he asked Peter if he could use his fishing boat so he could push out a little from the crowds on the shore and preach to them from there. When Jesus finished preaching he said to Peter "Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch" - verse four.
To continue with the story: Peter, the expert fisherman, said "Teacher or Rabbi, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at your word I will let down the net". Notice that Jesus said "Nets" but Peter "let down the net". (Singular)He
has just washed his good nets and only threw in an old dirty net that he was going to throw away when he was finished because he never thought Jesus would catch any fish.Peter and every fisherman knew that you can't catch fish with a net in the daytime because Lake Gennesaret was clear as crystal and the fish could see the net and would flee. That's why they fished at night.
Well, the result was that when Peter reluctantly threw in his old net it broke so he had to call in his partners with good nets. They then brought in a boat sinking load of fish. (See verses 6 and 7) The difference here is between TOILING and THE BLESSING. You see, the fish (or provision) fled from Peter's TOILING but flowed to THE BLESSING in which Jesus operated all the time and is available to us.
You can have THE BLESSING on you as well if you know Jesus. In Galatians 3:14 it says: He redeemed us in order that THE BLESSING given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. All you have to do is believe it and receive it.
