The Armor of God - Ephesians 6:11
I remember reading all the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table when I was a kid. He was a good King and he had brave knights like Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad who carried swords and shields which they used to help him in his mission of doing good and righting wrongs. Their mission usually involved having sword fights with bad guys who were also armed with shields and swords.
The Romans in the time of the Apostle Paul also wore protective shields and helmets as they went out to conquer their enemies. Paul lived with them for some time and was inspired by the Holy Spirit to use their armor as an analogy for we Christians to fight the good fight of faith and to defend ourselves against our enemy, the devil.
Ephesians chapter six starting at verse ten describes God's methods for being victorious in our faith fights. Eph. 6:11 says: Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. Then in verses 14 through 17 he says: 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
There are six pieces of armor that Paul admonishes us to use. There are five defensive weapons and only one offensive weapon, the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. This one weapon, the Word, is sufficient to destroy all the devil's lies. That was the only weapon that Jesus used when the devil tempted Him in the wilderness after he had fasted for 40 days and nights. Mt. 4:1-11 describes three occasions where Jesus says "It is written" and he quotes the Word of God all three times to counter the lies of the devil. VS 4: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (From Duet. 8:3)VS 7: Do not put the Lord your God to a foolish test. (From Ex. 17:2)VS 10: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. (From 2 Kings 17:36)
So when you are in a fight with the devil don't expect to be successful unless you put on the full armor of God and don't forget the most important piece, the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
