Prophetic Insights to Daily Living
The storms of life could be another title for this message. As a matter of fact there have been several songs written about storms. One that comes to mind is a song made popular by Lena Horne called "Stormy Weather". It was about a woman who missed "her man" so much that "It's stormy weather since my man and I ain't together, it keeps rainin' all the time".
This story is about Jesus and his disciples who were crossing Lake Gennesaret. A storm came up which
began to toss the boat around so much that Jesus' disciples thought that it would capsize and they would drown. When they looked for Jesus they found him asleep in the back of the boat. Mark 4:38 - Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?"
Apparently the Disciples hadn't been listening very carefully to Jesus' words earlier in the evening when he said "Let's cross to the other side of the lake", verse 35. Here's what Jesus did not say, "Let's go to the other side. I think we can make it if a storm doesn't come up"; nor did he say "It's the monsoon season. Maybe we can get to the other side before a storm comes up". Jesus does not waste words and he fully intended "go to the other side". He was so confident that His Father would back up his words that he went to sleep in the back of the boat.
Verses 39 and 40 say: 39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40Then he asked them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
Some may think that Jesus was too harsh on his disciples for chastising them for not having faith. Did he mean that they should have had faith in his words "Let's go to the other side" or did he mean that they should have rebuked the storm themselves and let him sleep? I believe that he meant for them to rebuke the storm themselves because if he was asleep the storm was not going away by itself. It needed someone to rebuke it and since the disciples didn't, he had to.
The whole point of this message is that Jesus has given us who believe on him (we are also disciples) the authority to control demons, diseases, and the weather. See Luke 9:1 - Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. He also said we should even greater works than he did. John 14:12.
So the question is: Are we going to allow the storms of life to control us or are we "going to the other side"?
