The Goodness of God - Psalm 31:19
Have you ever used the term "My goodness"? Most people have or at least have heard others use it. It is mostly used as an expression of shock or surprise and may have come from the expression "My God". At any rate, it has been in use in the English language for a long time. Actually "My goodness" or even "Your goodness" isn't all that good when compared to the goodness of God.
There are many scriptures in the Bible that refer to the goodness of God and here are only a few: Psalm 31:19 - How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. Psalm 23:6 - Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 69:16 - Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. Then in Exodus 33:19 when Moses said to God "Show me your glory" this is what God said: "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence". So the goodness of God is also described as God's glory.
Clarke's Commentary on the Bible describes God's goodness "as the fountain of inexhaustible compassion" of God. George Pearsons, Pastor of Eagle Mountain Church in Fort Worth, Texas asked his daughter to describe God's goodnessand she said "The goodness of God is the greatest thing we could think of but only greater". The Lord also gave me this revelation of His goodness as "God is good to infinity and Satan is bad to infinity".
As a matter of fact, you can go to www.kcm.org and order from Kenneth Copeland Ministries "The goodness of God package" which consists of a cd set called "The goodness of God", Blessed beyond measure devotional, and a book by Gloria Copeland called "Blessed beyond measure" all for $25. It is a great package.
I think we can now state emphatically that God is good and take great comfort in the fact that His Word, the Bible, is full of references to The Goodness of God. Click "Goodness" to see a topical study of goodness in the Bible Browser website. There are 83 scriptures plus a Greek and Hebrew concordance for the word "goodness". If you want an exhaustive study of "goodness" this is the place to go.
Caveat: we can't be good just by trying harder. What we can do is believe that God is good and we can ask the Holy Spirit through His grace to impart His goodness into us and walk in the Spirit because goodness is one of the nine fruits of the spirit: Ephesians 5:22.
