Dear Michael, Liberals are abusing the power of the government. They are trying to make the government shutdown as painful as possible for government employees and citizens alike. Veterans are forbidden from visiting public war memorials in Washington, DC . . . sick children are prevented from receiving certain therapies . . . families are evicted from their longtime homes in Nevada. Worse, liberals are playing political favorites when deciding what to shut down: a pro-amnesty rally is being held today on the otherwise closed National Mall . . . the Congressional gym is open . . . Camp David remains operational and ready for a presidential retreat. For liberals, the shutdown is for theatrical effect -- the more painful they can make the shutdown, they believe, the more likely they are to get their way. Even though the House has passed multiple bills to end the shutdown, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid refuses to even let the Senate vote on them. And the media would have you believe that conservatives are responsible for the shutdown. But in fact, liberals like Harry Reid and President Barack Obama are so attached to Obamacare that they are refusing to negotiate to reopen the government. This is political grandstanding at its worst. The Heritage Foundation remains steadfast in its fight for the principles of limited government and fiscal restraint. And I'm asking you to join this fight. We have initiated an Open Letter to President Obama and Members of Congress urging them to reopen the government and to defund Obamacare. Thank you for all you do. Sincerely, |
